Amy Chua is most popular in news paper articles because of her book titled “Battle of the Hymns”. This book written by Amy Chua has brought a lot of controversy to a lot of western parents because they think that Amy Chua abuses her two daughters, Lulu and Sophia. In my opinion I think Amy should back off a little bit and let her daughters have fun often. After my research I will give my opinion on the case and I will provide you with information on what other people are doing as a response to Amy Chua’s book.
After reading the article why Chinese mothers are superior by Amy Chua made me stop and realize that Chinese culture have different ways of making sure their kids are receiving the amount of education they need by their parents and school. Chinese parents want their kids to come home with straight “A’s” if one of their kids gets a “B” on whatever it is they got a “B” on would cause a huge commotion between the kid and the Chinese parent or parents, “Chinese parents can order their kids to get straight “A’s”, while western parents only ask their kids to try their best” says Amy Chua, what she means by that is that Chinese parents want perfection while Western parents want to see effort. Amy Chua talks about Western parents not caring to much about their kids getting bad grades but caring more about their kids self esteem. ”Western parents are extremely anxious about their child’s self esteem.” Another thing that Western parents do is that they let their kids make their own extracurricular activity choices as for which the Chinese kids don’t get to make that decision own their own. Amy is basically calling the Western parents slackers but saying it cautiously so that it’s not too obvious.
In the article Amy Chua is a wimp the author David Brooks gives his side of the argument but in this case he’s one of the people on Amy Chua’s side on agreeing with her way of parenting but he disagrees on not letting them take so decisions by themselves. “Her kids can’t possibly be happy or truly creative” says Brooks he’s probably stating that Chua’s daughters can’t be happy or creative because they never have time to have fun or to sketch because their mom are always on their cases. Brooks is right in telling everyone that Amy is a good parent because she really is although she may not seem like she is, but she only parents her kids that way because she cares for her daughters a lot and she only wants what’s best for them.
In the article mother inferior? By Hanna Rosin she talks about the negative side of being a “tiger mom”.” There are a thousand ways a child’s life can be difficult, and it’s the parents’ job to help them navigate thru them”, I agree with Mrs. Rosin because it’s the parents’ job to their kids through hard situations and the way Mrs. Chua puts it, it seems like she’s the one causing the difficulties in her kids’ lives. In most cases in my own personal opinion I would much rather be a “Pussycat Mom” spending time with the kids rather than being a “Tiger Mom” and wasting the kids time making them do something they don’t want to do.In many cases it’s about what the kid wantsand the parents to be there to support their choice if it’s for a good reason, rather than to call them “trash” or to even call them “lazy” of you see they’re trying their best.
After reading the article An Asians Father’s Gift: Permission to Fail by Ilyon Woo made me stop and stop and think. The father of a young girl sets her free when he dares her to fail one of her classes, which in this case is her math class. As the father of the girl asks her the consequences of failing her math class she responds “My transcript would be ruined and I wouldn’t get into college”, the father analyzing to the feed back of his question he tells her that it’s not a big deal if she doesn’t get into college by failing a math class. The daughter failed her class but despise her failure she came back up meeting her school standards and by passing all her classes with no trouble including her math classes, basically took her fathers words did what he told her and thanked him by raising her grades after failing one of the classes.
As a mother Amy Chua loves her daughters so as a parent she has to her daughters the education necessary for them to go on to college. If Amy Chua would have let her daughters do whatever they wanted there could have been a percentage that they wouldn’t of graduated from high school with such outstanding grades and being able to play the piano with perfection. I agree with Amy’s way of parenting because if she was laid back her daughters wouldn’t have been able to accomplish some of the stuff they did.
On the other hand, I agree with some of the western parents because I think that Amy took it a bit too far when she threatened her daughter or when she doesn’t let her daughter go to the restroom because she cant get The Little Donkey piece played right. Also, I disagree with Amy Chua’s insults towards her daughters because although it may seem like some words like “trash” or “fatty” don’t hurt the child on the outside but its killing them in the inside. Amy Chua no failing allowed policy is going to damage her daughters as their older because they don’t know what it feels like to fail so they wont know how to react to it because their mom was always their to make sure they didn’t fail not even once. After reading many articles on Amy Chua I came to the conclusion that it’s not that she’s a bad parent it’s just that she’s over protective and she always wants what is best for her two daughters. Doesn’t everyone want their kids to get the education they deserve? Who wouldn’t, I know for a fact that Amy Chua does that because she’s showing her daughters that she loves them and that she cares for them.
Failure
In 1929 Alexander Fleming’s carelessness to clean his Petri dishes lead him to the greatest discovery of penicillin. Alexander Fleming didn’t know that by keeping staphylococci’s in a Petri dish and leaving it sit there would lead to the greatest cure that would save many lives. This was a great discovery and it happened because of a simple mistake. If Alexander wouldn’t of left the bacteria sitting around the cure to staphylococci’s would have never been found.
In some cases there are people who make a mistake but yet don’t seem to learn from it. The biggest mistake I’ve seen so far involves my cousin. He always seems to be in jail for a long time. My family warns him not to get involved with gangs but he doesn’t seem to reason with us. The cops warn him and he always tells them that he won’t be in jail again because of the same reason but somehow he always ends up in jail. He makes many promises telling us that he will change but he acts more like another person the person we all want him to be but after like a week or so I guess he gets tired of pretending and goes back to his ways.
Another example of failure that leads to success is that one time I cooked dinner for my brothers but I accidently added the wrong ingredient. Not knowing that I had added the wrong ingredient I set dinner on the table for my brothers. As my brothers were talking about the taste of the food my mother walks into the kitchen and since there was a little bit of the dinner left over she decided to try it. Standing there waiting for her feedback she looks at me with a surprised face, not knowing what to expect I ask her what was wrong with the food she then looks at me and says “wow this is good, what did you put in it?” I then asked her why she had ask that question and she replies “because it tastes better than when I make it.” From that day we use the accidental recipe rather than the one we used to use before.
In conclusion, although everyone thinks that failure is always a bad thing, everyone fails one or more times in life so why make a big deal out of something? After all every failure has a solution to it. “Try and fail, but don’t fail to try” Cheating What do you do when your practically your whole class decides to cheat? Well, Pelton a teacher decided to fail 28 of her students because they decided to cheat on their biology final. Pelton decided to fail these 28 students but the board thought her grading was too harsh on the students. The board told Pelton that she should “curve the kid’s grade.” In my opinion by telling her to curve the grades they made a bad decision because if the students decided to plagiarize it’s obvious that they don’t care so they’ll obviously try to do it again because they’ll think that since they got away with it the first time they’ll probably get away with it again. Peltons decision to resign was a good choice. If a teacher does what’s right and someone else tells her otherwise it’s obvious that she can’t stand tall because they’ll bring her down because she can’t control the decisions made by the people higher in position then her. Many parents upset with peltons decision to fail their kids called the school and complained that peltons choice to fail the 28 students was a big mistake. The principal and super-intendent agreed on Peltons decision but it seemed that everyone else including the school board didn’t and Pelton didn’t like that at all. In my opinion Pelton’s choice was a good one although some people disagree. I believe that those 28 students should have gotten an “F” instead of a curved grade. Now because of them the school even got a bad reputation. “The first and worst ofall frauds is to cheat one`s self, all sin is easy after that.”- Pearl Bailey
In Class Essay Have you ever sat down and thought to yourself “I can make a difference?” Difference comes from people taking action. Sometimes it can be a big group of people and sometimes even the slightest minority. Change isn’t always a good thing change can also be interpreted as a violent action that can change the world forever. In this essay I will provide you with impacting events that have happened in history that have had a big impact on us.
A good example of negative change is what happened a Tuesday morning September 11, 2001. Four airplanes were hijacked by 22muslim terrorists working for Mohamad Atta. Three of the four airplanes hit their targets, 2 were targeted for the twin towers, 1 was going for the pentagon and the last ones target was either going for the capitol building or the white house. They’ll all reach their destination except for one plane now known as “Flight 93”. This is a good example of negative change because the only thing that we got out of that was many deaths and many destroyed buildings.
On the other hand, a good example of positive change is what happened on flight 93. Flight 93 was a hijacked plane that was targeted to crash into the capitol building or the white house nobody knows though because before it could hit its target it crashed into the rural areas of Pennsylvania. There were about 44 people aboard the plane and they decided to take the plane over and crash it before the terrorist could have gotten what they wanted. These 44 brave people decided to sacrifice their life for the well being of others even If it meant leaving everything behind.
Another great example of positive change that I’ve seen with my eyes is the torch club in the Saticoy Boys and Girls club. What they did is that they did a fundraiser and with all the money they raised they decided to give to a little boy in 4th grade who had a liver transplant to help him pay for the transplant. The torch club isn’t even a big group of people; there are only about 15 people. The members aren’t even that old they’re all between the ages of 11-16. I’m proud to be part of the torch club because it felt so good when we saw a huge smile across the little boys face. As Meade once said “Never doubt a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has” the torch club makes this quote stand true.
In conclusion, it doesn’t matter if you’re a huge group of people or if you’re just 10 or 15, you can change the world for good or bad. It doesn’t matter how old you are or from where you come. You can make a change, so what you waiting for? Form a group and make a difference just like the brave men Todd Beamer, Mark Bingham, and Jeremy Glick, or like the torch club. If they did it do can you.
Medea In the play “Medea” by Euripides Medea kills her kids to get revenge on her ex husband Jason. In my opinion Medea is the villain and not the hero. What mother kills her kids to get revenge on a man that doesn’t want to be with you anymore?
Medea loves her kids a lot and wouldn’t want anything bad to happen to them. If she would of left her kids with Jason maybe his new wife would have treated them badly, she shows a lot of affection towards her kids because she kisses them and hugs them. It’s also Jason’s fault all that happened in the first place. Medea is not a bad person it’s just that she cares.
But, what mother kills her kids with her bare hands? If I were Medea I would have just killed myself. Kids are kids and you should let them grow instead of kill them. Plus, if they saw that their mother killed herself because of their dad maybe when they grew up they would have gotten revenge on Jason for her. Obviously Medea wants stuff her way and doesn’t like thinking about stuff before she does it.
Instead of Medea killing her precious possessions why wasn’t she pleased when they told her she was in exile with her kids? After all Jason told her that he would support her and her kids needs. So she would have gotten two good things out of one instead of just bringing guilt on herself, because killing your kids is a big mistake.
In conclusion, I think Medea did the wrong thing in killing her kids. She could have kept them and the exile without any regrets, but decided not to so her biggest loss is her kids.
